About the nature trail checklist
The nature trail checklist is a free nature hunt game for children aged 3 to 7, played with an adult. It comes in two halves. First you make a picture together: choose the woods, a garden, the park or a pond, pick morning, afternoon or evening, and add whatever you'd hope to see there. Then you take the checklist outside and look for the real thing.
There are over 50 things to find, all common in the UK, and the list changes with the season so you only see what's out now. They're in eight groups: minibeasts, snails and slugs, birds, trees and leaves, frogs, toads and newts, mammals, flowers, and finds such as feathers and pebbles. Rarer finds earn more acorn points. Each one comes with a short tip on where to look. Nothing on the list is for picking or eating. Look, don't touch or eat.
Questions from adults
Is the nature trail checklist free?
Yes. Playing, making scenes and ticking off the checklist on screen cost nothing, with no account and no ads. Printing and getting the PDF need your email. If you tick the box, we'll also send occasional Nono news and play ideas.
What age is it for?
It's made for children aged 3 to 7, playing with an adult. Younger ones can choose the pictures and point things out. The adult reads the tips and keeps an eye on the outdoor part.
What is there to spot?
Over 50 common UK things in eight groups: minibeasts, snails and slugs, birds, trees and leaves, frogs, toads and newts, mammals, flowers, and finds. They include a robin, a 7-spot ladybird, an oak and a hedgehog. The list follows the season: in autumn that means conkers, sycamore seeds, spider webs and falling leaves. Nothing on it is for picking or eating.
Why do you ask for an email?
Your email unlocks Print and the PDF on that device. The PDF downloads straight away; we don't email it to you. Getting occasional Nono news and play ideas is a separate box, left unticked, and everything unlocks either way.
Do we need to print anything?
No. You can take a phone and tick things off as you go. Your scene and ticks stay on that device until you press Start again. The PDF is one A4 page: your picture at the top, then the checklist with points to add up.
Where should we go?
A park, a garden or a tree-lined street will have plenty of the list. Use the walk finder on this page for woods and trails near you. It opens Google Maps or a trusted walk finder's own site in a new tab, and we don't see or keep your postcode.
